Hey My Crocheters!
Let's talk about synthetic or Acrylic fibers. Most of you know that acrylic fiber is a type of plastic. These fibers are not rendered from animals at all. Though I prefer natural fibers there are many great uses for acrylic yarns. Keep reading for the benefits of using acrylic yarn.
Durability: Acrylic yarns are durable and not as prone to coming apart as some of the more delicate natural fibers. You can also wash acrylic yarns in the washing machine at a higher temperature than other fibers. Of course be sure to follow the care instructions on your yarn for best results. Acrylic yarns are wonderful for bags or home goods, and other projects that you want to be able to beat up a bit and still wash in the machine.
Hypoallergenic: Since acrylic yarns are not made from natural fibers those of us with a sensitivity or allergy can wear projects with these yarns much more easily. There are many yarns that are 100% acrylic that do not have natural fibers at all. Even without the natural fibers acrylic is still very soft to the touch.
Not pest friendly: Since synthetic fibers are not made from animals moths are not as likely to eat up your project. Pests are the number one enemy of yarn and it is nice that acrylic is not as appetizing to those darn pests!
Acrylic can be just as beautiful and great feeling as a natural fiber yarn. I reserve acrylic for projects like bags, and acrylic blends for daily wear items. The acrylic give more durability to my projects. I hope this you find this list helpful and inspiring. Keep creating!
Happy Hooking!
