Hey My Crocheters!
This week I started with a post about crochet hooks and I’m going to keep on with discussion crochet gadgets and gear.
I want to talk about yarn winders and swifts. Do you need them both or just one or the other? Well I started with a winder only. I bought it from Hobbii and it is really useful and nice. I had used the paper towel roll method before and that works too, but a winder makes it go much faster. You can check out my YouTube tutorial of Rewinding Yarn Using a Yarn Winder for more info.
If you’re a newer fiber artist you may not know that you really do need to wind a hank of yarn. If you try to work from the hank the yarn gets tangles pretty quickly which is bad news! So how do you go about that. That’s when a yarn swift comes in handy. You use the swift to hold the hank of yarn, after you cut the tie points. This is the easiest way to go. Do you 100% need a yarn swift. The answer is no in my opinion. I have held the hank by hand and used my winder. It’s a great arm workout! There are other ways to hold your yarn while winding it as well, like putting the hank around the back of a chair. I bought a cheap swift that folds from Amazon and it works great. Here is the link to the one I bought: https://amzn.to/3SGJ8zk
You can buy some really nice and fancy swifts too. It’s 100% personal presence. That’s really all I have to say on it. Whether you’re winding or rewinding a winder and swift is a good purchase, not required but nice gadgets to have on hand. Especially, if you buy yarns that aren’t already wound into a skein/cake. It is also a good idea to rewind those really slippery yarns to help keep them from getting tangled. The winder will actually make a center pull cake. Which is nice!
Happy Hooking!
