Hey there!
Today is Tutorial Thursday here in the Yarn Packin’ Mama Universe. The stitch for today is the crocodile/scale stitch. This stitch is really an interesting technique where it uses a modified front post double crochet stitches in a cluster. I love this stitch pattern because it really does look like scales which is perfect for projects that call for that texture.
I will have a video tutorial on my YouTube channel which makes it easier to see what the modified front post stitches really look like. It also shows the four row repeat in detail. Let’s dive in!

Things to know about this stitch:
It is worked in multiples of 6 + 3. The 3 is the turning chain in the foundation chain. All chain 3 counts as a stitch.
It uses a modified front post double crochet in clusters. Where the stitches are worked sideways around the Dc post from the row below.
The foundation rows also use cluster stitches.
When working in Rows above “scales” you will work through the center of the 2Cl and chain space of the “scales” to secure them to the fabric.
It is best to finish on a Row 6 repeat before the final row.
