How to Crochet Half Double Crochet in the 3rd Loop

Hey there!


Today’s stitch tutorial is about how to Half Double Crochet into the 3rd loop. This stitch technique uses the Half Double Crochet stitch and moves the placement to the 3rd loop. This placement will leave the top of the stitch open. The unworked loops will give the finished piece a Knit-like texture. This is perfect for sweaters, ribbing, and any other project where a knit look is desired.

Things to know about Half Double Crochet into the 3rd loop

  • It does not have a multiple.

  • You do not work the front or back loops at all.

  • You work into the horizontal bar on the front of the stitch from the previous row.


Abbreviations:

Ch: Chain

Hdc: Half Double Crochet

St: Stitch

Yo: Yarn Over


Special Stitches/Techniques:

Half Double Crochet into the 3rd Loop:

  1. Yarn over and insert hook into the horizontal loop of the St from the previous row, yarn over and pull up a loop.

  2. Yarn over and pull through three loops on hook.


Ch any number.

In the second Ch from the hook Hdc.

Row 1: Hdc across, turn.

Row 2: Hdc into the 3rd loop across, turn.

Row 3: Rep Row 2 until the desired size is met.
