How To Foundation Crochet

Hi there!

Today I wanted to write about Foundation Crochet. This is a technique that allows you to create both the chain and foundation row at the same time. This technique is available for Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Double Crochet, and Treble Crochet. I have a video tutorial covering how to make the Double Crochet version. This is a handy technique because it will save a bit of time yo create the chain and first row simultaneously. You will find that you are actually working the piece vertically instead of horizontally as usual. Let’s get started!

Foundation Single Crochet

• Step 1: Ch 2

• Step 2: Insert hook into the second chain from the hook; going through two loops of the chain

• Step 3: Yarn over and pull through (make sure to keep this loop loose)

• Step 4: Yarn over and pull through the first loop on the hook

• Step 5: Yarn over and complete as a traditional Single Crochet stitch

• Step 6: Insert hook into created chain through both loops and repeat steps 1-5.

• Repeat this process for as many stitches as needed.

Foundation Half Double Crochet

• Step 1: Ch 2

• Step 2: Yarn over and insert hook into the second chain from the hook; going through two loops of the chain

• Step 3: Yarn over and pull through (make sure to keep this loop loose)

• Step 4: Yarn over and pull through the first loop on the hook

• Step 5: Yarn over and complete as a traditional Half Double Crochet stitch

• Step 6: Yarn over and insert hook into the created chain through both loops, then repeat steps 1-5.

• Repeat this process for as many stitches as needed.

• Step 1: Ch 3

• Step 2: Yarn over twice and insert hook into the third chain from the hook; going through two loops of the chain

• Step 3: Yarn over and pull through (make sure to keep this loop loose)

• Step 4: Yarn over and pull through the first loop on the hook

• Step 5: Yarn over and complete as a traditional Treble Crochet stitch

• Step 6: Yarn over twice and insert hook into the created chain through both loops, then repeat steps 1-5.

• Repeat this process for as many stitches as needed.
