Hey there! To continue with my exploration of crochet techniques I wanted to talk about Linked Crochet. In this technique you work into the previous stitch and link it to the next stitch. You can link all of the basic stitches. For my weekly tutorial post I am only covering Linked Single Crochet. I will film a consolidated video in the next few weeks. The Linked Crochet technique is great for garments and bags since the gaps between the stitches are not as pronounced as the traditional stitches. That also means it will use more yarn to make the finished piece. In order to link the stitches you work into the loops of the stem of the stitch. it is really interesting that when working double and treble crochet the rows will look like two and three rows of single crochet. I think the texture is really nice.

Linked Single Crochet

The first stitch of every row will be a traditional single crochet stitch. Then you will work into the first leg of the stem without pulling up a loop, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, and yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook; repeat until the end and turn. Then single crochet into the first stitch and repeat inserting hook into the first leg/loop of previous stitch.

Linked Half Double Crochet

After making a chain of your desired length insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull up a loop, and yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook. Next insert your hook into the first leg/loop of the previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, and yarn over and pull through three loops on hook. Repeat until the end and turn.

Now chain two, insert hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the first stitch of the row, yarn over and pull up a loop, and yarn over and pull through three loops on hook. Repeat inserting hook into first leg/loop of previous stitch as the previous row.

After making your chain of the number of stitches that you want add two more chains. Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over, yarn over and pull through two loops, and yarn over to pull through two loops. This is worked like a traditional double crochet stitch. Next insert hook into the top horizontal bar/loop, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, yarn over and pull through two loops, and yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat until the end and turn.

Now chain two and insert hook into second chain from the hook, yarn over, insert hook into first stitch of the row, yarn over, yarn over and pull through two loops, and yarn over and pull through two loops. Repeat inserting hook into horizontal bar/loop of previous stitch as the previous row. At the end it will look like there are two rows of single crochet stitches right on top of each other.

Linked Treble Crochet

After making your chain of the number of stitches that you want add three more chains. Insert hook into second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next chain, yarn over and pull through, and insert hook into the next chain, and yarn over and pull through. Then you will yarn over and pull through two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through two loops, and yarn over and pull through two loops. This is the same as a traditional treble stitch. Now insert your hook into the first horizontal bar/loop and yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into second horizontal bar/loop, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch and yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and finish like a traditional treble crochet stitch. Repeat until the end and turn.

Now chain three, insert hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next chain, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into first stitch of the row, yarn over and pull up a loop. Then finish like a traditional treble crochet stitch. Repeat the steps of inserting hook into the horizontal loops to link the stitches. At the end it will look like there are three rows of single crochet stitches right on top of each other.

This is a really fun technique that will give a sturdy fabric with smaller gaps in between the stitches. I plan to use this technique for bags and garments. That way things won’t poke through as easily or see through, say a top. I hope this was helpful!

Happy Hooking!!
