Three Ways to Surface Crochet

Hey there!

Today I wanted to talk surface crochet. There are 3 ways that I know how to surface crochet. You can find my video tutorial on YouTube

  • Slip Stitch Surface Crochet From Back to Front: inserting your hook from the front of the work and pulling up a loop followed by inserting your hook into the next desired space and pulling up a second loop to complete a slip stitch. Repeat this in and around the desired stitches for effect.

  • Slip Stitch Surface Crochet From the Front Only: inserting your hook around a stitch adding a loop and then working around the next desired stitch to pull up a loop to complete the slip stitch. Repeat this in and around the desired stitches for effect.

  • Single Crochet Surface Crochet: with a slip know in your hook insert around a stitch from the front and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops to complete the single crochet stitch. Repeat this in and around the desired stitches for effect.

I personally prefer the slip stitch from back to front. It provides the cleanest look and is very easy to do. However, if you cannot access the back of your work then the other two methods must be used.

Overall, it all comes down to the look you are going for and preference. The single crochet surface stitch would be great to add texture to a piece and make the surface detail pop a little since it has a raised effect.

I hope this way helpful and happy hooking!
