Three Ways to Icord

Hey My Crocheters!

I recently finished my sample for my headband pattern and needed a way to tie it on. So I went with an Icord for the tie. That led me to research ways of creating an Icord. I used the by hook method and it wasn’t great for a non-twisted yarn. Also the way I hold my yarn didn’t not make it easy. So I wanted to give the methods I discovered for making an Icord.

  1. Hook/by hand: This is a very accessible way to make an icord since as a crocheter the hook is already available and at hand. However, this method can be cumbersome since you keep three loops on the hook at all times and take two loops off to work each new row or level of the Icord. It does get the job done though and is low cost since you will have the materials already: yarn and a hook.

  2. Lucet Fork: This method uses a tool called a Lucet Fork. The tool enables you to create an Icord by wrapping the yarn around the prongs. These are easily found online. I purchased a low cost option here: https://amzn.to/4gfdALp from Amazon. It’s a Prym’s Lucet Fork and was about $10. I also found a Lucet Fork on Furls made out of Ebony. That one is $39. So you can find a Lucet Fork from about $10 which is low cost. I think it is its weight in gold because it is a much faster and easier method than by hook.

  3. Icord Machine: Fianlly we have a machine that can do the work. I found a Prym Icord machine on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3XvBXgv. I have seen these used before and they seem to work really well. I haven’t used a machine because I prefer to use a hand method for ease of storage. I also like that I can take a hook or Lucet Fork with me on the go. However, a machine would be really nifty for making a very long Icord. This method is also the most expensive since it is a machine.

Whatever method you choose you will have an Icord at the end. It’s only a matter of how much time and effort you want to put in. I hope this was helpful.

Happy Hooking!
